Pompeii A Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD, it remains in remarkably good shape since excavations began in 1748, continuing to this day. 2,000 of the city's 20,000 residents perished as volcanic fumes and ash choked the city with little warning. Today it is a major tourist site, with its own train station on the Circumvesuviana. |
